L'Oréal hired us to develop an MVP app for 10-20 pilot beauty salons in the US and France. The app serves as a hub for information, device management, data tracking, and customer support. It also promotes brand values and environmental impact, while providing an easy-to-use interface for a pleasurable experience. The app is primarily designed for the iPad, as it is already being used by the targeted pilot salons.
In 2018, L'Oréal partnered with Swiss company Gjosa to create a new showerhead that reduces water consumption in beauty salons by up to 80%. This device infuses haircare products directly into the stream and provides salon owners with a cost-effective way to save on water and heating costs. Stylists can offer their customers a unique, time-saving experience while promoting eco-friendly practices.
Problem
Beauty salons are wasting valuable resources, including water, energy, and product packaging. This not only impacts their spending but also their brand image, as they are not seen as sustainable businesses. This is particularly important for hair salons, which are known for using large amounts of water during hair washing, which can lead to water waste.
The dashboard page is the main page of the app. It shows the essential information for salon personnel:
→
Charts for the saved resources (accumulated and by day/week/month/year) — the primary indicator to track salons' positive environmental impact.
→
Tank bottle levels for the hairstyle products to quickly check the current state and plan accordingly your work with clients.
→
A banner to share your achievements on social media so that it could promote L'Oreal and the salon's brand values.
The page shows additional charts for salon management and device maintenance/ customer support with the ability to download data in .csv format. We brainstormed 10+ various charts and data for this page. But for the MVP launch decided to keep only four essential ones:
→
Giving more real estate to our primary chart of how much water is saved.
→
Rinsing temperature to provide some valuable insights to the owner on how the temperature affects the rinsing duration.
→
The in-flow technology allows infusing water streams with haircare products from the tanks attached to the machine. This chart is specifically made to track those tanks' shampoo/conditioner levels.
→
The project was going to be launched in several salons, so we decided to add some competitive aspects to the reports page to drive some engagement.
The page contains two main blocks. One is automatically ordering refills for the tanks running out of haircare products. During the research phase, we discovered that inventory tracking is one of the most apparent problems salons face. To ease their usage of our app, we developed a feature that allows the system automatically track your usage patterns and order the products in advance for you. Below that block is a regular ordering part to restock tank refills.
The screens below include some explorations of the app's dark mode that was planned for the next project phase.
The project was revealed at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2021. In 2021, it hit the Times's 'The best 100 inventions of 2021'.
The pilot has been successfully launched in the US and France. A global rollout is planned through 2023, and the new system is expected to be in 10,000 salons in the next few years. Additionally, an at-home shower device will be launched at a later date.
